WK4: UDUTU Project - Andrieux Joseph

The following application was developed to introduce Trigonometric functions to my Advanced Trigonometry class.  The online tutorial will provide a review of the pythagorean theorem with the hopes of further developing it to use to instruct students who are homebound on the following topics:

Inverse functions, Law of Sines,  Law of Cosines,  Law of Tangent

I found the application to be extremely difficult and not user friendly.  With my extensive background in network management and software development, I found numerous other software applications that provide more features while allowing you to move about freely.

The features to use are very difficult to find which causes a great abundance of time lost. When teaching a course, your most precious asset is time with staff/student resource following suite.

WK4: Andrieux Joseph Comments for Dana Kohls

First Paragraph is from Dana Kohl's Udutu Site. Click here to visit her site.

@ Dana - The learning network is a topic that is very extensive to work on. You are very courageous in doing so. You have incorporated a lucrative amount of videos in providing your learner to follow.  It is unique to see that you did not stay with one particular educator.  That provides a student the ability to differentiate who was talking about what.

We are all working so hard in getting our project done. I wish we would spoken sooner, I would have hinted to just stick with one part of social networking and just provide questions for students to answer.

The program is also not user friendly. Great effort in completing the assignment.

WK4: Andrieux Joseph Comments for Keui-Hsin Engelhard

First Paragraph is from Keui-Hsin Engelhard's Udutu Site. Click here to visit her site.

Are you going to hold an orientation? Have you ever attend or even worse, have you ever hold a presentation that most of the attendees were mentally checked out? Please watch this 2 minuets video clip from http://jacobkornbluth.com/feature-clips-orientation.html and see if you have the same nightmare. This course is going to teach you how to create a multimedia orientation talking book. First of all, let us understand the importance of orientation.
@ Keui-Hsin - The online application you created on the importance of providing an orientation and how to provide a proper is an attention getter. Providing an orientation is something still some companies and schools fail to do.

I read through your pages and they were informative. I am sorry if I could not help you earlier with the embedded link that you have. I needed to copy it over to my browser instead of simply clicking it.

As far as using this application for the first time, you have done a significant amount of work.

WK4: Andrieux Joseph Comments for Tamara Collins

Tamara Collins
The Writing Process
Your objective is to learn how to complete the writing process for a five paragraph essay. After you listen to the introduction audio be sure to click on the first step to begin.
First Step: Pre-writing/brainstorming

@ Tamara - The color scheme of the site was very creative in providing a student a warm environment to go to and learn about writing. You provided extensive instruction to writing a paragraph.

The step by step delivery you provided is very effective for students needing remedial instruction. With some additional feedback, be careful with the volume.

Week 4 Wimba Session 4 - Joseph Andrieux

After listening to the brief discussion on imoodle, I decided to visit the company through the web.

Being a Course Management System or a Learning Management System identified as 'open-source', it is gaining momentum in the educational industry as a tool in creating a unique method in delivering instruction. As Udutu, they are online authoring software applications. Moodle requires that host your web application on a web hosting server while udutu can be stored locally to function.

Both applications bring the virtual learning community close together and prompts them to be more engaged on projects. With moddle being an open source program, you can store udutu projects on the moodle platform.

With the Udutu project coming close to an end I have been coming into numerous technological issues. I have planned an introduction to an Trigonometry lesson. I will still continue to pursue forward in completing this assignment.

Comments on - Legere, Scott Wk3 LMS Choice

First Paragraph from Scott Legere,

This is all very complicated and I am coming to the conclusion that a topic area like Learning Management Systems and Organization could easily morph into its own year long program. As the previous two weeks have shown, there is a plethora of tools and systems available for not only developing learning content and organizing that that material per the needs of a specific student or institution.

It is very interesting that you touched on two items. One - the little time we have and Two - How complicated analyzing or creating a system as vast as FSO would take time.

I believe in any school district, you are limited to the knowledge that your IT department. Are they willing to go into implementing a system as complex as FSO's system and provide support to all staff members. I feel they are all looking for something simple, but managing the back-end is not important. It s the front-end.

Comments on - Zeigler, Jodi Wk3 Content Tools

Paragraph from Jodi Zeigler - Authoring tools are tools used to assemble a course as a whole. These tools offer features that allow you to compile course elements such as text, graphics, and questions (Tools of the trade, n.d). The features, software, and pricing for these tools can vary significantly. Authoring tools can range from web authoring, HTML editors, media and application tools, course authoring, and PowerPoint authoring tools. Authoring tools have so many different features it is necessary to research to make a decision on what features are needed to build into individualized courses.

Jodi - You have really explained the differences between element and authoring tools. This is an area where most individuals think that they are both the same.

The authoring tool is the collaboration application as you simply stated previously. It manages all of your data and allows you to create, but the element tool is equally important. You have to be able to create the elements that need to be used. You have addressed it with great detail.

Andrieux Joseph: Wk3 Reading Activity 10 - LMS Choice / Procurement

In the academic industry, it is very important for an organization to be able to manage its huge bank of data. The importance of this ability is crucial in providing instruction, managing student accounts, inventory, curriculum, student records, and more. As a business, having multiple systems does not provide simplicity for staff or students.

Institutions need to look into learning management systems (LMS) that is categorized as state of the art in providing ease of use and is capable to grow as the way we teach changes.

In order for an institution to be able to purchase the correct LMS application, they require to place a request for a proposal (RFP). "A request for proposal (referred to as RFP) is an early stage in a procurement process, issuing an invitation for suppliers, often through a bidding process, to submit a proposal on a specific commodity or service (Wheaton 2008)." The RFP process brings structure to the procurement decision and allows the risks and benefits to be identified clearly upfront. Specific requirements need to be specifically identified at the very start due to the cost and length of installation.  Central Wyoming College advertised publicly a RFP in September of 2008. The RFP was broken into parts (CWC, 2008).

Each section crucially identifies the requirements to be met by several departments ranging from accounting, academics, student interaction, infrastructure / hardware, inventory, and support. There are institutions that will sacrifice certain features to reduce cost, but as Central Wyoming College has identified in their RFP, they require all features to be fulfilled including being able to manage their data from the previous systems and various other applications.

The cost for the LMS can range from $250,000 to $1 million based on hardware being replaced and most importantly support and training to be provided to the school's staff and student body.

Discussion Board: Computer vs. Teacher

Will there be a time where instruction can be given by a computer? Will the traditional teacher be phased out? Will the quality of education change? With technology continuing to improve and break new barriers in our society, software and hardware are working together in harmony to eliminate more and more positions.

Technology has been able to provide information in a format, which allows individuals to learn without the presence of an instructor onsite. Remote areas such as towns in Alaska, Russia, China, Africa, Venezuela, Brazil, Australia, Canada etc have been able to use technology to reach and take advantage of “extended learning.” Video conferencing and Internet videos have allowed students to feel comfortable to learn at their own pace. This was the early 90s.

In the 21st century, we now have interactive web applications such as NovaNET Courseware that not only educates but also evaluates an individual’s ability. “NovaNET Courseware is the most complete, research-based, flexible, and engaging online courseware for high school and adult learners. With individualized instruction, a web-based platform and curricula that meets state and national standards, NovaNET Courseware can be utilized in any number of education applications including credit accrual, dropout prevention, summer school, credit recovery, virtual schools, and more. The rigorous courses and interactive framework promotes objective-based mastery helping learners reach academic success at their own pace (Pearson 2010). ”

NovaNET is one of the many software applications used around the country by school districts. High School Seniors who are in jeopardy of not graduating or needed additional instruction are being placed in classrooms where NovaNET is making a major impact in producing successful graduates. For a teacher to be affective, the seating in the classroom is averaged at 30 students. With NovaNET, a classroom of 60 or more is not uncommon. As remedial classes grow, the more use of this application is being introduced and used while educators are being used in rooms that require hands-on interaction.

Teachers will not be replaced, but there will not be a need for 50 teachers in a High School to teach English. This number will eventually drop down to 40 or less. The need for one on one instruction is gone. The need for instruction to be provided at an efficient price is now. “There are still lots of farmers around today. It’s just that we don’t need 50,000 teachers teaching English at the same time in the same way to little groups of kids. Technology can make things much more efficient in some areas of education. In a regular business, this would have happened already, but of course public education is not a business. There are a lot of other factors involved that like having an army of teachers around (crudbasher, 2010).”

Comments on Moncure, Jason - Week 2: Reading Activity, Main Post

The following paragraph is from Jason Moncure.

In order to reuse these chunks of learning you must have a standard set up that everyone follows so that one chunk can flow easily into the next chunk.  This puts limitations on what each little piece can do, but if everyone agrees to use the same standard, SCORM, then all the RLOs will be able to play well with each other.  Its similar to how every electrical outlet in the US is built the same so you can plug any device into any outlet.

Jason - Building a bridge between data, learning modules, ideas, concepts, and etc. is what drives progress in any industry. As you stated, in order to use chunks of learning a standard must be set up.

Manufacturers have incorporated ISO-9000 and higher to develop some form of quality control in their handling and making of a product. Who are the employees? How are they trained? How do we know that the employees know what they are doing? Every location has to be using the same shared information and they do have to play well with each other.

Comments on - Harvey John Wk2 Reading: ADL/SCORM

Last paragraph which is part of John Harvey's comment.

I am skeptical of SCORM, because as we discussed last night in our Wimba session, each new generation of technology seems to devour the previous one. How would the model be usable in a newer generation of management systems? How would the content of the RLOs not need to be updated with constantly changing variables (regulations, for example)? A standard for the industry is a great idea, but updates in packaging the content are an inevitability.

John - You are absolutely correct.  In every new wave, technology changes how we used to look at handling previously built tools.  As the shores of Ireland, rock formations are formed in unique shapes over periods of time. The evolution of technology can only be enhanced by how we change the way we operate.

The change will always continue to change. It is up to corporations who are not compliant in how to deliver and manage training to adapt to the new concept or it will fail due to its workforce not be educated to follow procedures and methodologies that once made the company so successful.

Andrieux Joseph: Wk2 Reading Activity 6 - What are They?

LCMS Concept and Application Design
What is Learning Content Management System (LCMS) and what is it for? The buzz mixed in with so many different methodologies of education is a concept that evolved from two other educational concepts - Course Management System (CMS) & Learning Management System (LMS).  LCMS is a concept methodology developed in an application that incorporates many learning objects in a form to provide ideal specific training allowing the learner to obtain expertise in a focused area. LCMS is the combination of CMS & LMS in providing a condense learning module (Ellis, E. 2001).

LCSM is an application that provides a more fine tuned way to educate a learner. Instead of a learner going through a series of courses to obtain an overall experience in a particular subject or area of knowledge, they are focusing on the specific task. A high school graduate is looking for an opportunity to be productive in society by getting a well paying job (Nichani, M. 2001).  This person could go to college and earn a college degree (Aeronautical Engineering by participating in courses that would broaden his learning experience and how he/she analyzes ideas or concepts. This student would fall into participating in the CMS concept of learning as a tool. If you take the same student and he/she decides on an alternate course and chooses a technical program such as learning how to fly a plane and become a pilot, then LMS would be more suited. Courses would be tailored and only focus on every aspect of flying a plane by providing a tack to follow.

Lastly, if the same student decides to be involved in aeronautics but on a more specific area such as communications, then the LCMS concept would be more suited.  The student would receive instruction that would allow him to be an expert on one task.

From a large cooperation LCMS is used to provide a learning system that is the same at all its locations - regional or global, that would focus on specific job functions. This concept provides business assurances that every position held by any employee to be performed using the same procedure and methodology.  School districts also use the same system.  School districts with multiple educational buildings in large urban areas provide orientation and in-service training for teachers so they would follow the same concept that would push the district forward together in providing an ideal learning environment for its students.

LCMS as an application provides real-time, on-demand and custom delivery of educational content using multiple formats (Perry, B. 2009) that would allow students to access learning modules. These learning modules are managed through a LCMS application that manages the flow of learning and the automation of keeping data current and accurate.

Wk 2 Discussion Board: Online Ed vs. Face-to-Face Ed

Before anyone could list pros and cons between Online Education vs Face-to-Face Education, one needs to identify what Online Education really is. At Full Sail University, a student is truly experiencing the Online Education experience.

Online Education is when you are participating in every activity that you would normally do in class, but you are communicating in real-time via a computer and an online content management service.  There is no sending email and waiting for a response. There is no listening to a recording of a professor instructing you how to proceed through the current lesson.

If you keep this in mind, Online Education will slowly take over face-to-face because of how technology is evolving. You are at home versus going to class. You have all of your resources readily available instead of bringing it the next day.  There is no need to take notes during a presentation. A student can always revisit the session later for better understanding.

Face-to-face still has its advantages such as lab assignments that need to be performed. Interactive role playing can't be done online. Eventually technology will be available at a reasonable price for more and more students where tasks such as these can be performed in the privacy of your own home.

Wk1 Activity: Comments for Carlos Benitez

The first paragraph is from Carlos  Benitez.

“A prerequisite to writing a good paper is an in-depth understanding of the subject. This understanding must be beyond words and deep into concepts”. From this important precision other important steps born, like summarizing, evaluating, analyzing, and synthesizing. Trough them the writer can get the adequate transition from the personal response to the analytical writing.

The concept in having an in-depth understanding of the subject is so correct. When one has a true grasp on what they have read, then higher thought and learning begins. Engaging in productive and meaningful conversations that will allow one to think and even possibly debate provides growth.

The additional thought is that should the reader appreciate how the writer is trying to share his or her own ideas. What if the reader has already made up his/her mind about a topic. Writing an academic paper is a challenge in it self. It should go through a series of reviews by peers and others considered as referees/instructors commenting on ideas being shared. Even though a student is following documented concepts in writing an academic paper such as describing an objective and the reasons supporting it, it doesn't mean that the writer has accomplished in meeting all of its requirements.

Wk1 Activity: Comments for Tamara Collins

The following paragraph was copied from Tamara Collins Blog Site.

"CMS’s or Course Management Systems is closely related to LMS’s and is a system most often used by educational systems. The CMS is an Internet-based software that manages student enrollment, tracks student performance, and creates and distributes course content (theJournal, 2004). A common CMS is the popular site Blackboard. Moodle is another example of CMS and LMS as well as known as a Virtual Learning Environment. It’s a software package that manages Internet-based courses and websites (http://www.moodle.org)."

The future of education and technology will not be able to work alongside. It is up to the educator to embrace technology to modify his or her delivery of instruction.

CMS & LMS are not only systems but they are method in delivering an sharing instruction with students and clients. Blackboard is a CMS tool to management and deliver information, but the Course Management System is a method of delivering subject content instruction in providing students a broad base of knowledge. Its design is to educate students and bring out critical thinking coming from reading and sharing information.

LMS provides a more customer type of structure based on the needs of the client with little less time to develop an area of expertise while LCMS provides more specific instruction with the expectations that the student is an expert when the lecture is complete.

You are correct with the technological concept for each learning platform.  It goes a little deeper where I became a little confused.

Wk1 Activity: History of VLE - Andrieux_Joseph Virtual Learning Environment, Where it all began.

In the the year 2010, students around the world and even next door have taken or are taking part in some form of education at home instead of in the traditional classroom. This form of learning is not new. It has just evolved into something that can no longer kept in a box hidden from the rest of the world.

"Distance Learning" which is also known as "Distance Education" is a concept that started as far back as the early 1700s. In 1728, a Boston paper was sending newsletters to anyone interested in learning short-hand. This form of media started a learning trend that later became the core of learning in our society today (Jensen, 2006).  From reading from news-weekly letters, listening to radio broadcasts, to watching public television educational shows, distance learning has provided educational institutions such as the University of Wisconsin the ability to stretch throughout its state to everyone at all ages and provide and education to any preferred course at anytime (Board of Regents, 2010).

In 1892, University of Wisconsin has demonstrated that education does not have to be within the traditional classroom. In our present time, a new vehicle has been developed over decades to launch the way we teach to be considered non-traditional and obsolete (Jensen, 2006). This vehicle is called "Virtual Learning Environment" (VLE). It is a system designed to support learning in any educational setting. It is not considered to be used for distance learning, but to provide additional tools to educators delivering lessons within the classroom. This environment provides text, audio, video, flexible communications, news feeds, and more so information can be shared with anyone around the world.

The tool has and continues to make a significant impact on how we teach. The traditional lecturer is replaced by interactive activities that encourage students to remain engaged in the classroom. The way we learn has changed and the way educators train and teach has evolved due to Virtual Learning Environment.

Wk1 Project: LMO Overview

Education has transformed into a complex umbrella of learning in the 21st century. Instead of an art, it has become a science. A science that is changing based on how technology is evolving and how we as learners are absorbing information. Exports and more exports have broken the learning concept into a learning platform, which incorporates Course Management (CMS), Learning Management System (LMS), and Learning Content Management System (LCMS).

As we continue to evolve alongside technology, other components have created educators and trainers to focus on a particular concept based on its client/student. In addition to online services being used as a vehicle for delivering instruction in a virtual world, managing the subject content is what is important. CMS shows how courses can be broken down and be delivered by subject. LMS provides a different structure for corporations to be exposed to information based on needs. LCMS introduces specific skill sets that are to be used for specific functions (Morgan, 2003).

All three concepts on this platform provide a certain level of expertise for the student to leave with.  But different concepts provide broad and unique instruction with the expectation that a student is an expert on one or more particular skills. With the availability of information continuing to grow alongside technology, we need to be more concern on how readily available technology is to a client/student.

Week 1 Wimba Session 1 - Joseph Andrieux: Optional

Even though I attended the first Wimba Session for this class, I wanted to make a comment. The session was not only an introduction to our class, but an overview of the expectations required.  There is a lot of work to be produced for this course which is more what I was exposed to from Full Sail University.

It can be intimidating, but it can be done.  For some of us, we are teachers who are about to return back to school with the expectations that we are prepared and ready to start our students on the right track.  Providing your top efforts in this class while assuring your students that you will provide them the ideal education is very challenging. My Get-Set methodology will be on full full throttle.

Wk1 Discussion Board: Sharon's Online Horror and Happy Story

The response to Sharon's post can be accessed here.

Waiting for a grade is tough. If you need to know if you are on the right track, feedback in a form of a grade with comments allows you to make corrections in going forward with other assignments. Especially those professors that provide only two tests as part of your submission for a class. If you make mistakes on the first one and you do not receive a grade back in enough time to correct your study/work habits, you will not be successful.

Wk1 Discussion Board: Commented on Margo's Post

Post can be found be clicking here.

Margo,
You and your family (mother) are in our prayers. I understand the frustration and stress that you are going through. Please keep in mind that you should not let your grades suffer. Please look into taking a leave of absence if it is possible. This course appears to be very intensive.
I am still dealing with the after effects of my father’s passing. Just finished teaching summer school which takes up all of my mornings and to prepare for fall High School classes in which they are about to start in two weeks. I am trying very hard to get ready to teach new Honors classes that I have never taught before to High School Honor Seniors. It is very stressing.
Margo – Please consider taking some time off. My health is on the down-turn at the moment and I am only in my early 40s.
Take care.

Wk1 Discussion Board: Online Education - Horror or Happy Story

When enrolling in a new class, there is always an expectation as to = “What am I getting my self into? Or “I can’t wait to I start class.”
High School Seniors Learning Online

Online courses add another level of frustration and anticipation. If this is your first time participating in an online course, I hope you did your homework by asking other students that you are able to communicate with or at least talk with technical support as them what you can do to avoid hurdles, barriers, and the empty void when you need help in the middle of the night.

My first online course was quite simple. We exchanged emails with word documents and performed research over the Internet.  After this experience, I expected that all online courses were the same. This was my first mistake. A true online course is a classroom requiring you to communicate in real time via video or audio requiring the user to be much more savvy with a computer.

My first week into class, I needed to upgrade my Internet bandwidth because projects that needed to be submitted would timeout due to file size even after compression. Phone, Cable, and Satellite providers of Internet Service all required 10 days to upgrade. Running over to the local college in the middle of the night was my only option.

Feeling that the worst is over, another hurdle fell on my lap. As projects became more intense, I have realized that my computer was actually obsolete along with the software applications I had installed.

Embarking on new added expenses that was not anticipated along with learning new software applications placed me in a spot where I did not have time. I started thinking that taking the class at school would have been much easier and less expensive. Work was a lot more extensive and required to be submitted with aggressive dates as if you were not working.

I learned before taking a class, you will need to speak with the school’s technical support before enrolling. Ask them, what the recommendations would be to avoid contacting them in the middle of the night before the project is due in 30 minutes.
